Dear Rachel, I recently applied for the Customer Operations Rep role (Ref: 17545) and was curious about the selection process, especially since no customer service experience was required. Is this the standard approach, and how can I better position myself for future roles at Phoenix?
Thank you for your question. For this role, we assess a range of transferable skills and potential, not just previous customer service experience. We're typically looking for strong communication skills, a willingness to learn, problem-solving ability and a customer-focused mindset.
We suggest that all applicants try to consider clear examples of how you've worked with people, solved problems, adapted to change or delivered a great experience, whether that's from work, education, volunteering or other life experiences.
If you're invited to interview, it's helpful to prepare examples that demonstrate your communication skills, teamwork, resilience and ability to support customers. Using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach can help you structure your answers clearly. Depending on the role, there may also be a short role-play exercise designed to assess your customer service skills, so it's worth practising how you would listen, empathise, ask questions and support a customer to reach a positive outcome.
As a final note, we're now Standard Life, reflecting our focus on helping customers build financial confidence and achieve better retirement outcomes. It's an exciting time to join as we continue to invest in our people, technology and customer experience.
We appreciate your interest and encourage you to apply again for future opportunities. Best of luck!
